Picture Source: Google, Knowing Mexico - Mega Project: Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Today in México is under construction an inter-oceanic corridor that is developing in the south of the country, from the coast of the Gulf in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz to the west coast of the Pacific Sea in Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, these places are key for the construction of the first highway and rail freight transport corridor that will cross the country of Mexico and will be completed in 2023. This project will lay the foundations for the future development of a maritime corridor similar to that of Panama in an estimated term of 10 more years.

Background Mexico, Nicaragua, and Panama have a privileged location as they are located on the "isthmus" of Latin America. The three countries are located in a “territorial neck” that due to its narrowness allows the connection of the oceans that surround them (Pacific and Atlantic Oceans), receiving and sending goods and transport from Europe, Asia, and the United States mainly.
Advantages of the interoceanic corridor in Mexico: 1) 79 municipalities and 149 localities equivalent to 2 million inhabitants in these regions of Mexico will have several economic benefits from this project development. 2) The costs of road and rail freight will be 25% lower compared to other countries at the beginning of the project and there will be 14 tax-free zones to attract foreign private investment for the next stages of development, also allowing the development of the export supply of the states benefited by this work in the south and southeast of the country such as sugar, cotton, and coffee among other natural products. 3) The growth in the tax collection of the country, aims at a growth of 52% accumulated in the next 5 years. 4) Regarding the Panama Canal, the Mexican interoceanic corridor generates a transit time of goods from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Sea, only 10 to 12 hours. by rail from one end of the country to the other and 3-4 hrs by road. 5) Regarding the Panama Canal route, 4 to 6 days of maritime crossing are avoided, which are approximately 4,971 miles (8,000 km) of the current routes to the United States of North America, which will generate at least one million dollars (US 1 M) of fuel savings for multimodal cargo companies by route, making Mexico a relevant logistics point at the international level.
The progress of this project are as follows: a) The rehabilitation of the 197 miles (317 km) railway line between the port of Coatzacoalcos in Veracruz and the port of Salina Cruz in Oaxaca. b) The modernization and expansion of the maritime ports at each end of the country with military security infrastructure recently entrusted to the Mexican Navy, who will also administer the country's customs. c) And the construction of 10 industrial parks along the land and rail route that also includes highways and a gas pipeline.
Conclusions It is clear that Mexico has indisputable geographical and technological advantages, compared to other countries due to its proximity to the United States of America, lower costs of goods, operations and labor, which implies routes with cheaper trade routes and with shorter times of relocation to serve the North American markets but also Europe and Asia. Mexico will be incorporated from 2023 when this construction is completed, to the new geography of economic flows and global supply chains of great economic value during the next 10 years. What is sought with this important project is to invigorate the economy and grow in a sustained way in the long term, providing many advantages in terms of costs and transfer days, also supporting the traffic of goods that are currently transferred through the Panama Canal that can have up to 15 days on the waiting list for cargo ship traffic (Cargo). The 12 international agreements with North America, Europe, and Asia will be used in Mexico to integrate regional industries into the value chains of the Import and Export Industry of products such as sugar, coffee, cotton, and other products. regional strengthening the economy of the region.
